Months ago I got a MySpace account. At the time i honestly thought is was not a very smart idea. None of my colleges endorsed it as a good career move especially for a “standards waving, artsy, anti-ugly design†web developer. Nope they did not want to have anything to do with my friend Tom, but yours truly did it anyway and now has a whole bunch of friends he wouldn’t correspond with even in a moral and/or physical peril. Never mind the multi-friend factor the question is why would do I choose to do this?
As a standards abiding web developer, I am now claiming my addiction to clean, well designed nice looking validating designs, a.k.a POSH. Just like my fellow celebrity “peers†the only way to keep my addiction in check is to visit rehab, MySpace being the cheapest and hippest.
Despite my analytics showing otherwise I tend to think I’m quite popular online and MySpace did present me with the perfect self indulging notion as to how many friends I have and how many views I have received. Basically the more friends I have the cooler I feel.
Apart from the pseudo confirmation of social acceptance I now have. I also got to practice under the harshest of all conditions. Nothing sends a chill as the perfect challenge and MySpace is exactly that. So I am now working on POSHifying MySpace and not feel as “geeky’ as my actual friends tend to think. Oh yes and I do, (against all the designer bones I happen to have) continue to update MySpace.
